On the 26th November, 1938, I had the honour to

forward to you a copy of a joint letter addressed to the Government of Hong Kong on the subject of certain widows' and orphans' pensions,

which was dated the 24th November, 1938, and which was posted to

Hong Kong on the 26th November. On the 12th March, 1939, as no

answer or even acknowledgement had been received from Hong Kong, Mr.E.R.Hallifax, one of the signatories, wrote to the Colonial Secretary, Hong Kong, to ask if the letter had been received. Colonial Secretary replied on the 31st March that a despatch on the

matter had been addressed to the Secretary of State and that he had been requested to convey his decision direct to the signatories of

the letter.

Office a letter, dated the 22nd March, referring to the joint letter of the 24th November, and informing me that "the Hong Kong Govern-

ment has agreed to the

payment of pensions from the Widows'

and Orphans' Pension Fund at the old privileged rate of conversion
